The Municipality of Cumberland’s Representative Volunteer Sharon Rogers was recently recognized at the Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony in Halifax on Sept. 28.
Rogers was presented a Provincial Volunteer Award by Dave Ritcey, Minister Responsible for the Volunteer Sector, and by Lt. Gov. Mike Savage.
“Volunteers represent the very best of Nova Scotia. They give their time, energy and talents not for recognition, but because they care deeply about their neighbours and the places they call home,” Lt. Gov. Savage said. “These individuals and families remind us that acts of service, large and small, have the power to strengthen communities and inspire others. On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I congratulate this year’s recipients and thank the thousands of volunteers across our province who make a difference every day.”

Rogers has served as president of the Oxford Seniors Club for the past three years and has been instrumental in revitalizing the organization.
Under her leadership, membership increased dramatically from a low of 27 during Covid 203 members currently.
She is a strong team leader whose leadership style encourages participation, supports new ideas and initiatives, and values collaboration and volunteerism.
Through Sharon’s guidance, programming has expanded to offer activities every day of the week and some evenings, including chair yoga, line dancing, card games, quilting, crochet, knitting, ukulele practice, special events and information sessions.
People with different talents have heard about the clubs’ activities and are now approaching them to offer their skills, which now include rug hooking, Dance for Health, stretching exercises and pottery classes with a renowned potter.
She is always focused on seniors’ needs and interests and consistently finds ways to address them.
The impact of her leadership is reflected in what members say about the club.
One member shared, “I was isolated but heard about the group from Sharon and now I feel I have support and interesting things to do with such a friendly and interesting group.” Another noted, “Ordinarily I wouldn’t volunteer for anything, but I do now and feel truly appreciated for the part I play.”
