What Does Protective Services Do?

Protective Services within the Municipality of Cumberland is responsible for coordinating emergency preparedness, response and recovery efforts, while also supporting local enforcement of municipal bylaws that help maintain community standards and quality of life.

Emergency Management

A key function of Protective Services is emergency management. This includes developing and maintaining emergency plans, coordinating with first responders such as local fire departments, RCMP and Emergency Health Services and leading the municipal Emergency Management Organization (EMO).

During events like severe weather, flooding, or other emergencies, the department helps activate emergency operations, provides timely public information and supports residents in need.

 

By-Law Enforcement

This can include addressing issues such as unsightly premises, noise complaints, dangerous or nuisance properties, and other local concerns. By working with residents to achieve compliance, bylaw enforcement helps keep communities safe, orderly, and welcoming.

In addition, the department supports volunteer fire services, including 15 rural fire departments and delivers public education initiatives focused on preparedness and prevention.

By collaborating with provincial agencies, neighbouring municipalities and community partners, Protective Services strengthens regional readiness and response capacity. Overall, the department plays a critical role in protecting people, property, and the overall well-being of the Municipality of Cumberland.
