African Heritage Month

February is African Heritage Month in the Municipalityof Cumberland.

The theme in Nova Scotia is Strength in Unity: Moving Forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power and Progress. It references the strength that comes from collective effort, the clarity that shared purpose provides, and the commitment needed to build lasting prosperity and progress.

The celebration highlights the achievements and resilience of African Nova Scotians, who have shaped the province’s history for more than 400 years. It includes events and activities designed to educate, inspire and build connections across Nova Scotia.

This year, we are featuring Maurice Ruddick, also known as the Singing Miner, who was born in Joggins and lived in Springhill and survived being trapped underground during the 1958 Bump.

Municipality of Cumberland Equity Plan

Equity & Diversity Plan Summary

The Equity & Diversity Advisory Committee (EDAC)

The Equity & Diversity Advisory Committee (EDAC) is in transition. Before we meet again, the Administration department must re-write the Terms of Reference (ToR), and pass that ToR through council for approval. When EDAC meets again, they will be in more of an oversight role until ~2027, when the plan will need to be edited and re-released.

If you have any questions, or would like to be on the committee, please reach the Community Engagement Coordinator at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
