Municipality of Cumberland Provides $916,000 in community grants

The Municipality of Cumberland is providing more than $916,000 to many organizations through its County General Grants Program, supporting programs and events with the aim of promoting arts, culture, tourism and recreation.
Mayor Rod Gilroy was joined by Deputy Mayor Fred Gould and Councillors Jennifer Houghtaling, Scott Lockhart, Angel McCormick, Carrie Lee and Marchel Strong in presenting cheques at five events in Upper Nappan, Pugwash, River Hebert, Springhill and Parrsboro on June 16 and 18.
“Community organizations are at the heart of what makes Cumberland such a vibrant and welcoming place to live. Through this year’s grants program, Council is proud to invest more than $916,000 in projects and initiatives that strengthen our communities, support volunteers, enhance recreational and cultural opportunities and improve the quality of life for residents across the municipality,” Mayor Gilroy said. “We are grateful for the dedication of the organizations receiving funding and look forward to seeing the positive impact these investments will have throughout the Municipality of Cumberland.”
The mayor said there were more than $1.4 million in requests with the municipality able to provide $916,849 through its small and large capital programs, large and small operations and maintenance programs, programs and events as well as district grants, annual grants and student bursaries.

McCormick Hired as New Deputy CAO of the Municipality of Cumberland

The Municipality of Cumberland has hired Allie McCormick as its new deputy chief administrative officer.
She begins her new duties with the municipality on July 13, 2026. She replaces Peter McCracken, who is becoming the new chief administrative officer upon the retirement of present CAO Greg Herrett.
“I am honoured to be part of a team that is so dedicated to serving its residents and communities,” McCormick said. “Throughout my career, I have been passionate about local government and the important role it plays in people's everyday lives.
“I look forward to working with council, staff, community partners and residents to support the municipality's goals and help build on the many successes already taking place across Cumberland County."
Work Beginning on New Springhill Housing Project

Shaw Rural Housing, in cooperation with the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council, is set to begin the latest project to improve the housing supply in Springhill and area.
Work is expected to begin early the week of June 15 on a new housing development that will eventually see a mixture of single-unit dwellings, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes. The first four buildings in the initial phase will be multi-unit buildings with 21 units in total.
