Municipal Staff Give Back

January 31, 2012

November 2011 was a month of interesting scenery around the E. D. Fullerton Municipal building. From handlebars to mutton chops, many an upper lip sported a decorative patch of hair to raise money for the now-infamous Movember, a month dedicated to raising funds for prostate cancer.

In all, the county raised $4,050.00 for prostate cancer research, an amount that all staff and councillors are proud to have contributed to. One of most successful fundraisers was an auction, which included bidding on things like hours of physical labour/yardwork, haircuts, tickets to local events, song downloads, homemade preserves, Christmas decorations, and many other miscellaneous items.

Other examples of fundraisers included an extra jeans day per week, 50/50 donations, and the shaving of a long-standing and very familiar mustache on the Emergency Measures Coordinator. Many thanks should be extended to the coordinator of these events, Vicki Weaver, the Recreation Coordinator for the County, and the Staff Social Committee,  as they made the success of the fundraisers possible.

Besides Movember, Cumberland Municipal Staff have done other things throughout the year to support local community charitable organizations. At the most recent staff meeting, employees decided to donate the $1,500.00 they have raised through their Jeans Day Fund to two Cumberland County organizations—Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program and the Food Bank.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a national charitable program that helps financially disadvantaged kids participate in organized sport and recreation. They help cover registration, equipment and/or transportation costs. More information can be found on their website: http://jumpstart.canadiantire.ca/.

The staff will continue to donate $2.00 from every paycheck in order to be able to wear jeans on Friday and will ultimately decide as a group how to donate it in the future. A designated portion of the Jeans Day Fund goes directly to support a World Vision sponsor child as well.
