Mayor Scott urges action on Isthmus of Chignecto

Cumberland County’s mayor is calling on the provincial and federal governments to move forward on repairing the dikes along the Isthmus of Chignecto between Amherst, N.S. and Sackville, N.B.
In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, Murray Scott said his council is thankful for the Chignecto Isthmus Climate Change Adaptation Comprehensive Engineering and Feasibility Study that was released last spring but feels the proposed 10-year timeline for the work to be completed to be “totally unacceptable.”
Cumberland County to issue RFP for policing services

Cumberland municipal council is going to issue a request for proposals for policing services.
Council accepted the recommendation from its policing options review committee during its December meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022.
Municipal units busy with healthcare recruitment, retention

At a meeting on health care in Springhill on Dec. 8, 2022, Cumberland region mayors were disappointed more information related to local efforts pertaining to health care around physician recruitment and retention was not highlighted.
“It was disappointing the members of the community who were at the meeting were not enlightened about the efforts underway in the Cumberland region as a joint effort between our three municipalities and volunteers within our communities,” Cumberland County Mayor Murray Scott said.
River Hebert celebrates official opening of community centre

Several years ago, River Hebert residents identified the need for a community centre. At about the same time, officials with the Brookside Curling Club were trying to decide what to do with their aging curling rink near the heart of the village.
Its membership was no longer active in the sport and it didn’t want to see the building fall into disrepair or become an eyesore. The community seized the opportunity and from a concept on a piece of paper, various volunteers came together with their talents and skills and redeveloped the building into what it is today – an example of what a community can accomplish when it puts its mind to something.
Compassion is key to ending gender-based violence

While there have been gains made in the campaign to end violence against women, the guest speaker during the Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women says those gains have barely scratched the surface.
Speaking during a noon-hour luncheon at the Amherst Lions Club, Kiara Bubar said gender-based violence is just as much an issue as it was on Dec. 6, 1989, when a gunman massacred 14 women at a Montreal engineering school.
