River Hebert celebrates official opening of community centre

Several years ago, River Hebert residents identified the need for a community centre. At about the same time, officials with the Brookside Curling Club were trying to decide what to do with their aging curling rink near the heart of the village.
Its membership was no longer active in the sport and it didn’t want to see the building fall into disrepair or become an eyesore. The community seized the opportunity and from a concept on a piece of paper, various volunteers came together with their talents and skills and redeveloped the building into what it is today – an example of what a community can accomplish when it puts its mind to something.
Compassion is key to ending gender-based violence

While there have been gains made in the campaign to end violence against women, the guest speaker during the Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women says those gains have barely scratched the surface.
Speaking during a noon-hour luncheon at the Amherst Lions Club, Kiara Bubar said gender-based violence is just as much an issue as it was on Dec. 6, 1989, when a gunman massacred 14 women at a Montreal engineering school.
Making wishes come true for Springhill

With the cost of Christmas escalating, a group of Springhill and area residents are coming together to make sure everyone has a Christmas Wish under the tree on Dec. 25.
Every year at this time, a tremendous effort is made to make sure every child has something under the tree on Christmas morning and Christmas for Kids in Amherst and Toys for Tots in Springhill goes a long toward achieving that goal. Christmas Wishes works to ensure older children and adults don’t go without.
Pugwash gains national recognition

The honours and recognition keep coming for a small seaside village in Cumberland County. Pugwash was recently recognized by Communities in Bloom Canada as the winner of the Class of Champions – Small category.
They received a rating of 5 Blooms – Silver and a special mention for Prospering Partnerships during the 2022 National/International Symposium and Awards ceremony in Victoria, B.C.
Public Hearing, Water Utilities Amalgamation

Please note, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board public hearing into the amalgamation of the Parrsboro, Pugwash and Springhill water utilities into the Cumberland County Water Utility has been moved from an in-person to a virtual format.
This change is due to an NSUARB panel member assigned to the hearing having been exposed to COVID-19 as a close contact.
