Heritage

Heritage endows us with a sense of place and informs us about who we are and how our community has developed over time and contributes to our shared sense of identity and character. Heritage can relate to anything historical: an event, a building, group of buildings, a site, structure, archaeological site, tree, garden, geological formation, fossil site, person, family, habitat or other natural or cultural significance and its associated land. It may be significant for scientific, aesthetic, architectural or historical or cultural reasons. The Municipality of the County of Cumberland has focused on heritage buildings. Homes, churches, schools, train stations, stores and barns are an important part of our cultural landscape and are strong reflection of cultural identity and way of life.

Heritage By-Law

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland adopted a Heritage Property By-Law ß(link to Bylaw page) in 1982. The purpose of this by-law was to recognize and protect historic buildings, streetscapes or areas within the Municipality that merited registration as a Municipal Heritage Property under the provisions of the provincial Heritage Property Act. Subsequently, the municipal heritage program has also sought to take an inventory of all house and churches which were built prior to 1914.
